Online lessons are just as effective as in-person but there are a few small quirks that can be easily overcome with a little planning.
Here's a few tips:
-
I use the video conferencing platform Zoom. It provides the best sound and video quality and is completely free. It has a number of interactive features that help enhance online teaching and learning .
-
Zoom Client can be downloaded on any device and only requires a valid email address. It can be downloaded here: https://zoom.us.
-
Once you have signed up and the Zoom app is downloaded, you will receive google calendar invite email containing the date and time of the scheduled lesson. This invite will contain a link to a Zoom meeting room where the lesson will take place. All you have to do is click on the link a few minutes before the lesson and... Presto! You're ready to go!
-
I suggest that students wear earbuds. This will cut down on lag and feedback.
-
Due to the nature of the platform, I'm unable to accompany students. This is due to a sound delay that the internet connection creates. I will supply students with accompaniment tracks 24 hours before the scheduled lesson. Students should have a separate device (phone or tablet works great) to play the tracks. This allows me to listen without hearing delays between the music and voice. It is preferred that this device is paired with a bluetooth speaker if the sound output is weak.
